Anderson School Admission Test FAQ’s

  

Is the admissions process the same for all grades?

The admission process to get into Anderson is dependent on the grade your child is going to.

 

What if I live outside of New York State?

Anderson does not accept children from outside the five boroughs. You must reside in one of the 5 boroughs of NYC.

 

What is the difference between Anderson and Gifted and talented district schools?

Anderson is a citywide gifted and talented citywide school so students from all over the city can apply. Furthermore, for rising K-3rd graders have to score in the 97th percentile to be accepted rather than just in the 90th.

Where is the Anderson Test Held?

If your child is attending a DOE school in K-2 grade, he or she will be tested in their own school during the regular school day between January 6 – February 5, 2014. If your child attends non-DOE school in Pre-K – 2 grade, he or she will be tested on a weekend in January at a designated school site. The DOE will contact you with the exact place and time.

 

How can I start the admissions process?

You must ask the Department of Education to administer the free testing to your child by filling out the Request for Testing Form. You can submit an online form here. Kweller Prep recommends submitting your application online (remember to print a receipt!) Parents who complete the form online are notified about test results and school placement earlier than those who submit a hard copy. That is an advantage in the spring, when you may want to tour the school if your child is accepted. You may need to register for tours immediately, as tours at many schools tend to fill up quickly.

 

What do I do once I am notified of my child’s test scores?

In early April, the DOE will notify you of your child’s test result. If your child qualifies for G&T placement, an application will be included. If your child’s score doesn’t meet the minimum eligibility, then your child can test again next year. (You can keep on testing until 7th grade.)

 

What is the cut-off score?

This varies year to year however, your child must score in the 97th percentile to be considered. The school starts from the 99th percentile and works its way down. If your child scored in the 90th percentile but not the

 

Is the Anderson Test free?

Yes

 

Does Kweller Prep offer Anderson Elementary prep classes for rising K-3 graders?

No. However Kweller Prep does offer prep classes for rising middle school students. Kweller Prep also offers one on one tutoring for children of all ages.

 

Upper Elementary (4th-5th grade) 

 

How do I start the admissions process for Anderson Upper Elementary?

First your child has to take the NY State English and Math Tests. After you have received your scores you must send your scores to the school.

 

Does Kweller Prep offer Anderson Upper Elementary prep classes?

No. However Kweller Prep does offer prep classes for rising middle school students. Kweller Prep also offers one on one tutoring for children of all ages.

 

Middle School (6th-7th grade) 

 

How do I start the admissions process for Anderson Middle School?

Your child has to apply directly to our school using Anderson’s own school application form. Students from all boroughs may apply. The deadline for the application is the same due date as the district middle school application.

 

Will getting into Anderson affect other middle school offers?

Anderson is a citywide school so it does affect your district middle school offers. Additionally, Anderson is not listed under any district as it is a citywide school.

 

What if my child goes to Anderson for Elementary School? Does that guarantee that my child will get into Anderson?

Yes. As long as they are in good academic standing. Current Anderson elementary students do not need to take the Anderson Admissions test. However, Anderson does expand its class size in 6th grade so there are seats available for outsiders.

 

How many seats are available in 7th grade?

This varies year from year, as the school does not know how many students will get accepted to other schools such as Hunter.

 

Where is the Anderson Test Held?

The Admissions test for rising 6th and 7th graders is held at the Anderson School building located on 77th between Columbus and Amsterdam.

 

What time should I arrive to the School on testing day?

The doors are open at about 8:30am. Kweller Prep recommends arriving early just in case. The Admissions test for rising 6th and 7th graders. The test ends at about 11:30am.

 

Is the Anderson Test free?

Yes

 

Is Anderson a High School?

No. Anderson is not a High School. It only offers classes from grades K-8.

If you are interested in enrolling your child in our SHSAT prep course, please note we start prep classes the summer before the commencement of 7th grade. Please plan accordingly.

 

Why go to Anderson?

Anderson has the highest acceptance rate for Specialized High Schools. Anderson is a Reward School. Reward Schools are schools that have demonstrated high performance and/or high progress relative to schools in the rest of New York State. (Anderson 8th graders were exempt from taking the NYS Math test because they take the Algebra Regents.)

What kinds of High Schools do AMS students later attend?

We are proud that the vast majority of our 8th graders have consistently received offers from their top choice high schools. Many received acceptances to specialized public high schools (Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, Brooklyn Tech, LaGuardia Arts, American Studies at Lehman College, MSE at City College and Brooklyn Latin) and desirable, high performing local schools including Beacon, Bard Early College HS I and II, Eleanor Roosevelt, Millennium, Nest + M, Townsend Harris and Upper Lab. In addition, students have been accepted at private schools such as Brearley, Dalton, Deerfield, Fieldston, Friends, Horace Mann, Loyola, Nightingale, Regis, Spence and Trinity. We have a full-time guidance counselor who helps families with high school articulation.

 

What is The BEST Way to Prepare for the Anderson Examination?

Kweller Prep. There, students can take multiple proctored practice tests, and work through some of the toughest math and English questions on the Anderson Entrance Exam with experienced instructors. Dear Anderson families,
It is with joy and excitement I remind you that the 2014-15 school year begins in less than two weeks! I truly hope you have been enjoying the sunshine and free time. We have been planning for the new school year and have tons of exciting new information to share with you but let me first start off with information from last year – test scores!

Anderson is a Reward School, as we were last year. Reward Schools are schools that have demonstrated high performance and/or high progress relative to schools in the rest of New York State. We are very proud to be recognized as a Reward School for two years in a row. Since their release, we have been analyzing the scores for useful information. (Our 8th graders were exempt from taking the NYS Math test because they take the Algebra Regents.)
